Sizzling Summer

June 2, 2009

KENNESAW, Ga. - The summer may mean a break for student-athletes in the classroom. However, for Kennesaw State golfers it's a summer of hitting the links for amateur events around the country and the world.

In the United State Open qualifier at the Marietta Country Club, Matt Nagy lost in a playoff for the last spot to advance to the Sectionals. The KSU sophomore shot a 1 under par 69 in the event.

Nagy, a former Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team selection, shot a 2 under par 70 for a runner-up finish at the Southern Amateur Qualifier at the Golf Club of Georgia. With his second place finish, Nagy qualified for the Southern Amateur at the Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tenn.

A trio of Owls qualified for the 88th Annual Georgia State Amateur Championship. In a qualifying event at the Manor Golf and Country Club in Alpharetta, KSU signee Ben Greene shot a 67 while J.P. Putnam shot a 74 and Alex Jones shot a 75.

Jeff Karlsson, who was an A-Sun All-Freshmen team pick this season, played three events this summer in his native Sweden and has enjoyed tremendous success. He won the Lerjedalen Open, finished fourth at the Hot Screen Open and placed 14th at the Skandia Junior Open. He has moved up 150 spots in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and has a 73.25 stroke average over eight rounds this summer.

Peder Lunde Hermansson, who signed a National Letter of Intent with Kennesaw State and will play for the Owls this fall, has competed in six events this summer with a pair of top 10 finishes and has a 75.23 stroke average. Hermansson and Greene will both play for the Owls this fall.
