Baker's Dozen
Feb. 19, 2009
KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior Jennifer Baker had 22 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists while senior Britteny Henderson added a double-double as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team rolled past Belmont, 68-46, to give KSU a winning record for the first time this season. With the Lady Owls up 25-22 at the half, KSU (13-12, 10-7 A-Sun) scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half thanks to Baker and Henderson to extend the lead to 10, 34-24. Ahead 40-30, KSU pulled away with a 15-3 run, with seven points coming from the free throw line, to go ahead 55-33. KSU did not connect from the field for the last six minutes and 49 seconds of the game, as Belmont (16-10, 11-6) continued to foul the Lady Owls to extend the game. The Lady Owls pushed the lead as high as 27, taking advantage from the charity stripe with 22 makes on 28 chances. The Lady Owls shot just 35 percent from the field, but held Belmont to 29.3 percent shooting on 17-of-58 from the field. The Lady Owls had 32 points from bench players, with Henderson's 12 leading the way. KSU also dominated on the glass, pulling down 51 rebounds to just 36 for the Bruins. Henderson had 10 rebounds to lead all players, while Baker fell just short of the double-double with nine. The win enabled KSU to move over .500 for the first time this season. After starting 0-4 - including two losses to Atlantic Coast Conference foes - the Lady Owls had three times reached the .500 mark but couldn't quite get over the top. Thursday night's win also assures the Lady Owls that they will not finish with a losing record in A-Sun play for a second straight year. Tevera Moore led Belmont with 15 points. The Lady Owls will return to action this Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when they host Lipscomb in the final home game of the season. Senior Day festivities will commence prior to the game, as KSU honors Baker, Henderson, Lennisha Johnson, Ashley Johnson, and JoeDonna Molden, who is on pace to graduate this year. |
