Lady Owls Battle ETSU
Feb. 26, 2009
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Greteya Kelley was one of four Lady Owls in double-figures with 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team fell 73-66 on Thursday afternoon to East Tennessee State in an Atlantic Sun Conference game. Montinique Nixon had 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for a KSU squad that battled back from a 17-point first-half deficit to put a serious scare into the home squad. ETSU scored the first 11 points of the game and threatened never to look back. ETSU led 20-3 and led by the same margin of 17 with just under five minutes to go in the half when the Lady Owls started to rally. A 10-2 run, capped by a DeAndrea Bullock free-throw to bring KSU within nine, 37-28. KSU would settle for being down by 10 at the half, 41-31. After ETSU (18-9, 16-3) built a 16-point advantage in the second half, the Lady Owls rallied again. A lay-up by Kelley with more than 12 minutes to go cut the deficit to eight points, 53-45. Four minutes later, KSU trailed by six after a pair of Bullock free-throws. KSU (15-13, 11-8) would twice cut the lead to five in the final minute of the game, but each time, ETSU would make the necessary free-throws on the other end to maintain control of the game. Britteny Henderson and Jennifer Baker each scored 12 for the Lady Owls, but both players battled foul trouble for most of the game. Siarre Evans scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead ETSU in both categories. The Lady Owls will wrap up their season this Saturday at USC Upstate. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. |
