Fitzgerald Advances in Women's Amateur Championships

June 2, 2009

KENNESAW, Ga. - Abby Fitzgerald is enjoying a successful summer as she was one of 32 players to advance to the championship flight of the 94th Women's Southern Golf Amateur Championships at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Albany, Ga. on Monday.

Fitzgerald qualified for the championship flight after shooting a 1 over par 73 in the qualifying round. She finished the 18-hole qualifier in 15th place and was one of 32 players advancing to the match-play flight where she will be paired against Corinna Rees from the University of Arkansas. The winner will advance to the round of 16.

"This is such a fantastic accomplishment for Abby," said Kennesaw State head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "This was just her second competitive round after a year off due to major hip surgery. Abby has been anxious to get back to competitive golf and this result shows she is ready to get back out and compete for Kennesaw State."

Megahn Gockel, from the University of Kansas, took medalist honors shooting a 3 under par 69, one shot ahead of Brooke Pancake of Alabama and Sara Beth Davis of Texas.
