KENNESAW, Ga. - Brittany Vining scored two goals as Kennesaw State won its preseason opener, 4-1, over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon at the KSU Soccer Complex.

"We had a solid performance for a spring opener," said head coach Rob King. "There are some things we did well and other aspects we need to improve on, but overall I was pleased and it was a good result."

Vining scored the first and second goals of the match as they Owls broke a 1-1 tie with three unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of the match. Kennsington Shimandle and Katie Scott scored the final two goals for the Black and Gold.

The preseason match was played in three 30-minute periods with the Owls taking a 1-0 lead in the first period on Vining's first goal of the spring, a grounder past the left side of the GSU keeper. The Panthers would tie the match in the second period before Vining netted her second goals for the game-winner in the 66th minute.

Shimandle scored in the 74th minute off a corner kick, taking the ball in front of the GSU net, faking a shot, which brought in a pair of Panther defenders, before finishing with a left-footed blast high over the keeper's left side.

The final goal of the afternoon came with a quality finish off a shot from Beth Meadors that rebounded off the GSU goalkeeper at the feet of Scott in the 81st minute.

"Both goals were taken very nicely by Ken (Kennsington Shimandle) and Scotty and that put the match out of reach," added King.

A surprising number of fans, 202 announced, were in attendance for the noon kick-off as the teams pushed up the start time to avoid rapidly moving thunderstorms headed for the Kennesaw area.
