Owls Strong in Final Regular Season Meet

May 11, 2009

CLEMSON, SC - Their final meet of the regular season was a success for the Owls who not only set several new school records at Clemson University over the weekend, but earned a few first place finishes as well.

Distance runner, Mackenzie Howe continued her stellar sophomore season, leading the Owls in the 1500m run with a first place finish (4:50.02), followed by her teammate Erin Sutton in second (4:53.70).

Howe looked strong in the 5000m run as well, earning a second place finish (18:20.02), with Sutton once again coming in right behind her, in third at 18:36.84.

Also on the track, Shantela Davis gave the Owls an impressive performance in the 200m dash, reclaiming her Kennesaw State record, crossing the line in 24.75.

"Shantela has worked very hard this season," Assistant Coach Devin West said. "We have been training her more in the 400m, which has helped to improve her times in the 200. She had a great meet, and is looking really strong heading into conference."

Off the track, the Owls received several strong performances as well. Jessica Lumpkin led the Owls throwers, taking first in the shot put with a throw of 12.08m, a new Kennesaw State record, while also earning a third place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.86m, also a new record.

Chiquita Hawthorne had a good meet as well, taking third in the shot put (11.54m), fourth in the discus (38.71m), and fourth in the hammer throw (42.45).

The Owls had several strong performaces in jumps as well, with Jill Arthur earning second place in the long jump with a distance of 5.59m. Suzzette Van-Lare finished close behind in fourth (5.38m), while taking third in the triple jump (11.81m), as well as fourth in the high jump (1.65m), behind teammate Jakia Ragland who took second (1.70m) in the event.
